The Be A Good Human Scholarship

Established by The Dwyer Family - In Loving Memory of Kylie Rodgers

Through this scholarship program, Lighthouse For Hope hopes to invest in the educational future of Arizona families who have been touched by childhood cancer or a life-threatening blood disorder, recognizing that the impact of a diagnosis reaches far beyond the patient. Awards of $500-$1,000 are available for survivors/patients, their siblings, and their parents pursuing post-secondary education.

The Dwyer Family

The Be A Good Human Scholarship was established in 2026 by The Dwyer Family, whose son Stephen was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 16. Like so many families, the Dwyers know firsthand the weight of diagnosis. The fear, disruption, the courage it takes to keep moving forward.

Out of that experience came a desire to do something lasting: to lift other families who are walking a similar road. By funding educational opportunities for survivors and their loved ones, The Dwyer Family hopes to turn hardship into hope and remind every applicant that their future is worth investing in.

Kylie “Flo” Rodgers

Kylie Rodgers was a softball pitcher, psychology student, a fiercely loyal friend, and one of the most intentional humans the people who knew her had ever met. She carried an extraordinary gift for making others feel seen and valued.

In 2017, Kylie was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Over the five years that followed, she never stopped pouring herself into the things she believed in, including Lighthouse For Hope, whose mission she fiercely championed. Kylie passed away in 2021 at the age of 20, leaving behind a community forever changed by her warmth and example to always be a good human.

A diagnosis changes everything, including plans for the future. Those applying for this scholarship share a resilience that most people will never understand. They have sat in hospital rooms, navigated impossible decisions, and found ways to show up for each other when showing up took everything they had. We know this because we’ve seen it up close:

Stephen Dwyer’s Leukemia diagnosis interrupted his high school graduation, but he went on to receive a scholarship, attend Lake Forest College, and become captain of the swim team.

His sister Brennan, watched her family navigate childhood cancer firsthand, and scholarships made it possible for her to pursue a career in social work. Today, Brennan is Lighthouse For Hope’s Program Director, showing up every day for families fighting the same battle her family once faced.

And then there’s Kylie. Kyle’s path to school was shaped at every turn by her diagnosis. In between relapses, treatment, and relentless interruptions that cancer brings, she kept her eyes on the horizon. She made it to the University of Washington where she majored in psychology. While being treated at Seattle Children’s Hospital for relapse, she helped design 2 studies examining how mental support for teen cancer patients makes a difference in their well-being and survivorship. Kylie found her purpose at school, and in the final years of her life, she didn’t want to be anywhere else.

Investing in these futures sends a profound message. It says: we see what you’ve been through, and we believe in where you’re going. It says that Kylie’s belief in people, her daily insistence on being good and doing good, is still alive and making a difference.
